Hamura's Saimin in Lihue, Kauai is one of those "hole-in-the-wall" gems that you find by word-of-mouth. Well, people have been talking about Hamura's Saimin for decades now. When you talk to folks from Honolulu who are on their way to Kauai on business or for a family vacation, many will tell you that Hamura's Saimin is a must on their itinerary. Locals and visitors alike enjoy Hamura's Saimin and you will find long lines of patrons waiting to be seated inside the small diner. Your best bet is to go during an off-peak time and enjoy an afternoon snack or perhaps a late dinner. Eating in is part of the experience. The small saimin stand has the quaint charm of a 1950's local eatery. Leave your VISA card at home; it's not accepted here. However, don't worry because you can get your fill of delicious local food from their simple menu for under ten bucks. How hungry are you? Hamura's gives you a choice of sizes (small, medium, large, extra large, special, extra large special) and other goodies (vegetables, egg, roast pork, meat, won ton) to drop into your bowl of noodles. And don't forget to order BBQ Sticks (chicken or beef) that go for just a buck a piece. Be sure to save some room for dessert, because you'll also want to have a piece of their fresh Lilikoi Pie. Light and refreshing, it's a satisfying way to top off your meal. By far, it's the most delicious bowl of saimin to ever hit your palate. Coupled with the cozy atmosphere of the diner with its U-shaped tables and friendly patrons, you really get to experience the laid back and friendly environment that sets Kauai apart from the hustle and bustle of Honolulu. If you want to take a piece of Kauai back home with you, you can purchase raw saimin noodles ($5 for 12 servings of noodles) and a whole Lilikoi Pie to bring back to the family. (Only recommended if you're taking an inter-island flight -- these items need to be refrigerated and won't survive an 8-hour flight to the east coast.) So next time you're in Kauai, make sure a trip to Hamura's Saimin is on your agenda!
